Outreach Efforts Make a Difference
An Update from Jewish Federation Israeli Emissary Omer Karavani
Recently, I’ve had the privilege of engaging in meaningful outreach efforts, sharing my Israeli story, and having dialogue within the local community. One of the highlights was my presentation at the Sunnyside Presbyterian Church in South Bend.
I was truly moved by how welcoming and open-hearted the congregation was. They showed genuine interest in understanding my journey and the broader Israeli narrative. The warmth and curiosity in the room made me realize how important it is to create these spaces for dialogue, especially during times when division and misinformation can be so easy. It’s in moments like these that we build bridges, foster empathy, and approach understanding, even across cultural and religious boundaries.
In addition to my presentation at the church, Bob Feferman and I are excited to announce the launch of a new series of classes for Forever Learning. The title we have given to the series is: “Understanding Modern Israel: the people and its struggle for survival and peace.”
These sessions are designed as open conversations tailored for the non-Jewish community, but all are welcome. (Many of you have already heard some of the talks, such as “My Israeli Story,” and “The melting pot in the early days.”) I am also creating a new presentation about the Jews of the Middle East. This class will also be offered at the Jewish Federation for our community as well.
Through these classes, we aim to provide an approachable and educational environment where people can learn about Jewish culture, history, and the Israeli perspective. At the same time, we welcome everyone to join in the learning experience. This initiative is more than just an educational program; it’s an opportunity to create friendships and build bridges.
To further build on these efforts, I’m thrilled to share the launch of a new initiative called Israel Around the Table. This program is as simple as it is powerful: a dinner hosted at someone’s home, where they can invite friends and colleagues for an evening of conversation about Israel.
Unlike many other discussions about Israel, these dinners are not centered on war or conflict. Instead, they will focus on the daily realities of life in Israel—how it differs from life in the U.S., the unique challenges and joys of our culture, and the shared humanity that connects us all.
This initiative is designed to make conversations about Israel more personal, relatable, and meaningful. Over a meal, with the intimacy of a home setting, we can explore perspectives and ideas in a way that feels natural and comfortable.
All these efforts, from the presentation at Sunnyside to “Forever Learning” and “Israel Around the Table,” reflect the importance of outreach during this time.
They remind us that even in challenging times, we can choose connection over division, dialogue over silence, and understanding over fear. By opening these doors, we’re not just educating, we’re building a community where everyone feels invited to learn and grow together.
Thank you everyone for giving me the opportunity to be your Emissary.
