This message feels particularly timely for me as I begin my role as Director of Programming here at the Federation. Like Rosh Hashanah, my work is about renewal: creating new opportunities, while remembering and learning from what has come before. As someone who has recently returned to the South Bend Jewish community after many years away, I rely on your insights and conversations to guide this work.

One recent conversation was about restarting our Jewish Art Fair, which hasn’t taken place since COVID (not to be confused with our Fine Art Exhibitions). As someone who wasn’t here for the last few decades, I wouldn’t have known about it without that suggestion. This is exactly how meaningful programming takes shape—not in a silo, but together. So, if you see me at an event, say hi. Send me an email with ideas. Or stop by the Federation—I’d love to meet you and hear what matters most to you.

We recently saw a powerful model of the programming we aspire to: thanks to Bob Feferman’s persistence—after four attempts—we welcomed Dr. Khaled Atalla, Director of the Emergency Department at Galilee Medical Center, who described the day-to-day coexistence of Arabs, Bedouins, Druze, and Jews at his hospital in Nahariya. The feedback from our survey was incredible, and it affirmed that our community values these kinds of people-to-people programs—programs that inspire hope, highlight positive stories from Israel, and connect us with interfaith partners like Sunnyside Presbyterian Church.

And this is just the beginning. Looking ahead:

October 5 — A Conversation with Guy M.: A member of the elite 669 IDF rescue unit and one of the first responders at Kibbutz Re’im and the Nova Festival, Guy will share his firsthand account. Rosh Hashanah teaches us that creation, remembrance, and renewal are all connected. It’s been six years since I left, but the memories and deep connection I feel toward this special community have remained close to my heart. I’m overjoyed to see familiar faces again and to reconnect with so many of you after all this time.

This time, I’m honored to return as part of a delegation from Access Israel—the leading organization in Israel promoting accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities and the elderly. Our mission is to ensure that every person—regardless of ability—can live with dignity, independence, and full participation in society.

We’re here to present a unique and impactful initiative called the Purple Vest Mission—an international emergency preparedness program that provides life-saving support to people with disabilities and the elderly during crises such as war or natural disasters. The Purple Vest Mission creates practical systems to ensure that the most vulnerable are never left behind when emergencies strike.

It’s hard to put into words how excited I am to return and share this message with such a community that has meant so much to me. South Bend gave me a warm home and unforgettable experiences, and it is a true honor to come back and present a meaningful project from Israel—one that reflects the very best of who we are.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Bob Feferman, the Community Relations Director, and his successor Jordan Price, CRC Chair Barb Lerman, and the entire CRC Committee, who made this visit possible. I also thank The Simon Foundation of Temple Beth-El for co-sponsoring the event.

After more than one year and nine months of Israel’s struggle for survival against Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran and its other proxies, here is a good news story you won’t want to miss.

On Wednesday, September 17th at 7:30 PM our community will have a unique opportunity to hear the inspiring story of “Galilee Medical Center: a Model for Coexistence.”

The event is co-sponsored by Partnership2Gether for Western Galilee, Sunnyside Presbyterian Church, The Simon Foundation of Temple Beth-El, and the Federation’s local Partnership2Gether committee. It will take place at the Jewish Federation.

The keynote speaker for the event will be Dr. Khaled Atalla, Director of Emergency Medicine at Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya, Israel.

Since the hospital is located just a few miles from Israel’s border with Lebanon, Galilee Medical Center has faced many challenges. After Hezbollah began its attacks on October 8th, 2023, the entire hospital moved into its underground facility and faced the extreme challenges of coping with routine visits to the ER and battlefield wounds of both civilians and IDF soldiers.

Yet the story behind that story is that this hospital, and its patients and staff, serve as a model for coexistence and provide great hope for the future.

Galilee Medical Center serves an incredibly diverse region of Israel called Western Galilee that includes Christian-Arabs, Muslim-Arabs, Druze, and Jews. All are Israeli citizens. The patients and staff of the hospital reflect this fascinating ethnic diversity.

The story of Galilee Medical Center that Dr. Atalla will share provides a microcosm of what peace could look like one day in the Middle East, a region where bitter ethnic and religious rivalries have become the norm.

Our Jewish Federation is connected to Western Galilee through Partnership2Gether, a co-sponsor of this event along with the Jewish Federation.

Dr. Khaled Atalla, an Arab citizen of Israel, was born in 1985 to a Christian family in Kfar Yassif village. In 2003, he started medical school at The Technion in Haifa where he met Jasmin, a Muslim-Arab, and they married after they both graduated from medical school.

In August 2016, Dr. Atalla and his family moved to Nes-Ammim, a special village founded in 1964 by European Christians as a sign of solidarity with the Jewish people after the Holocaust. Among its aims and activities, Nes-Ammim strives to contribute to peace-making by organizing seminars of encounter and dialogue between Israeli Jews and Arabs.

After Dr. Atalla graduated medical school in 2011, he completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the Bnai Zion Medical Center in Haifa in 2016. Dr. Atalla also worked as a Clinical Instructor at the Technion and served as a Clinical Tutor for clinical rotations of medical students. He was recognized for Excellence in Medical Training two times with awards.

During his Internal Medicine residency, he became interested in Emergency Medicine, and he subsequently performed a residency in the field at Galilee Medical Center from 2016 to 2019.

Following his Emergency Medicine residency, Dr. Atalla completed a year of Emergency Medicine Fellowship training and an additional six months of extra fellowship training focused on Emergency Medicine Leadership at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Canada.

In April 2022, Dr. Atalla returned to Galilee Medical Center, as a senior physician and began serving as director of the hospital’s Emergency Department.

The Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley is turning 80 and the community is invited to celebrate in style at a Backyard Birthday Barbecue on August 17 from 12–3 PM.

Set against the backdrop of summer sunshine and community spirit, the event will feature live Motown and soul classics performed by Terry Austin & Soul Discovery, bringing rhythm and joy to the festivities. Guests are encouraged to bring folding chairs or blankets and settle in for an afternoon of music, food, and fun.

Kosher BBQ favorites, including hamburgers, hot dogs, grilled veggies, corn on the cob, salads, and more, will be prepared under SBK supervision, with a vegetarian option available upon request. Lawn games, field sports, and a bounce house will keep all ages entertained, while a special PJ Library craft adds a creative touch for the little ones.

I hope you are doing well in those hot\windy\raining\cold\humid\all of the above days of summer. (The Midwest is an interesting place indeed.)

On August 14th at 7 PM, I will have the privilege of giving a presentation at the Federation titled “Jews Under Islamic Rule”, an exploration of a fascinating and often overlooked chapter in Jewish history. I created this presentation because the media often overlooks the Jews of the Middle East and North Africa. Also, since my family is from the Middle East, I decided it’s important to share this story.

This lesson is not only a historical overview, but also a dive into the experiences, challenges, and cultural development of Jewish communities living under Islamic rule across centuries and continents.

I had the honor of giving this presentation in two meaningful settings prior to our next event. First, at the Forever Learning Institute in South Bend, Indiana, as part of a three-part lecture series I developed for adult learners interested in Jewish history and culture.

Second, I gave it in Wilmington, Delaware, where I was invited by my friend and fellow Israeli emissary Yuval Moha to present this to the local Jewish community and federation.

In this upcoming presentation, I will cover key topics that often go unexplored in traditional narratives. We’ll begin by establishing the indigenous connection of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel, grounding the broader discussion in the historical and ancestral roots of the Jewish nation.

Long before Islam, Jews had kingdoms, prophets, and temples in the land—something crucial to understanding later periods of Jewish exile and adaptation.

From there, we will examine the Islamic conquests and the beginning of Islam which dramatically reshaped the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of Europe and the connection to the Jewish people in the land.

We will discuss the golden age of Judaism under Islamic rule, where philosophers, scientists, and leaders flourished. They contributed not only to Jewish civilization but to Islamic and global knowledge with ideas and practices that to this day are considered the norm.

We will also turn our attention to unique communities like the Yemenite Jews, who preserved ancient customs, melodies, and Hebrew pronunciation. We’ll explore why Yemenite Jews are so distinct, and what their story teaches us about resilience, adaptation, and diversity within the Jewish people.

Jewish community security is no longer just the responsibility of professionals or institutions. It is a shared obligation that begins with community action. As antisemitic incidents rise globally, Jewish communities are responding not with fear, but with proactive, united efforts to protect their people, spaces, and way of life.

Jewish institutions are adopting layered approaches to safety: access controls, communication plans, and regular drills. These actions not only prepare for potential threats but also build a culture of collective responsibility.

Organizations like the Secure Community Network (SCN) help empower communities through education, training, and coordination. However, the most effective security comes from within, from the people who know their spaces, their routines, and their neighbors.

Community action starts with awareness. From staff, leaders, and volunteers to school parents and congregants, every individual plays a role in maintaining safety. When community members are trained to recognize suspicious behavior, respond to emergencies, and follow security protocols, the entire network becomes stronger and more resilient.

Community action also includes outreach. Interfaith partnerships and cooperation with law enforcement build bridges and reinforce a sense of solidarity. When Jewish communities stand together with others, they are stronger and safer.

Security does not mean closing ourselves off. It means protecting the openness, warmth, and vitality that define Jewish life. Through interfaith partnerships, neighborly cooperation, and public vigilance, we can build bridges while building resilience.

Ultimately, Jewish security is about people caring for each other. It is about showing up, getting trained, asking questions, and staying engaged. In a changing world, community action is not just a defense; it is a declaration that Jewish life will endure, thrive, and remain unshaken.

That is why we are inviting all Jewish community members and our interfaith partners to participate in one of two security trainings provided by SCN on Thursday, August 28 at 1:30 or 6:30 PM. These sessions will equip you with practical skills to help keep our institutions, families, and gatherings safe.

I urge everyone—clergy, staff, volunteers, and congregants—to take part in this important opportunity.

This year we are honored to host a delegation from Western Galilee through Partnership2Gether who will be featured in our annual Yom Haazmaut program. Given their challenging experiences over the past year and half, we are calling the event, Celebrating Israeli Resilience. The program will include a memorial ceremony for fallen soldiers and victims of the Hamas attack on October 7th. Among those honored will be Jordan Buskila (Z”l), son of delegation member Shimon Buskila. Following the ceremony, our Shaliach Omer Karavani will interview the delegation about their wartime experiences and rebuilding of the border communities impacted by the war.

The delegation members have extensive experience living on Israel’s northern border and have been on the front lines of rebuilding efforts since October 7th:

Shimon Buskila: Father of Jordan Buskila, who was murdered by Hamas at the Nova Music Festival on October 7th, 2023. Shimon, married to Merav Buskila and father to Liad, Sapir, and Jordan (Z”l), is a member of Kibbutz Kfar Masaryk and works as the VP of Marketing at the kibbutz factory. He previously worked in agriculture for nearly 17 years. His wife’s great-grandparents were one of the founders of their kibbutz, and Shimon’s three are the fifth generation of the kibbutz family.

Meital Beham: Meital has lived in Kibbutz Matzuva for the last 13 years with her husband Gidi and their three children: Ilay, Yahav, and Saar. A graduate of culinary studies, Meital volunteers in various roles at the Kibbutz. During the war, she served as Evacuee Community Manager on behalf of the Regional Council of Matte Asher, managing three different communities simultaneously. She and her family, including their two dogs, were evacuated on October 8th.

Golan Rosenberg: Director of the Matte Asher Community Center, serving 32 kibbutzim and villages—both Jewish and Arab. Golan was born and raised in Kibbutz Yehiam. He is married to Ricky and has three children: Moran, Ilay, and Romi. Golan was the community manager of Kibbutz Yehiam, following 25 years of army service in Combat Unit and Logistics in the northern border and in Gaza strip, where he was wounded in a military operation against terrorists and fully recovered.

In addition to dinner, the program will also feature a tasting station from the Israeli whiskey company, M&H Distillery.

About Todd Hoover

Todd Hoover earned his B.S. in Art Education from Indiana University Bloomington in 1968 and an M.F.A. from the University of Notre Dame in 1973. He taught drawing and photography at Riley High School and Indiana University South Bend. In 1999, he received a Lilly Endowment Education Grant to study non-silver photography and is a member of the Northern Indiana Artist Association.

Hoover has exhibited widely in juried shows and solo exhibitions at venues like the South Bend Museum of Art and Indiana University South Bend. He transitioned to digital photography in 2010, initially finding it challenging. By 2012, he focused on nature photography, and in 2013, he enlarged photos of toys and figurines. From 2014 to 2015, he created bird images and birdhouses using “Paint-by-Number” strips. He returned to the darkroom in 2016, experimenting with unique patterns, and incorporated high contrast stripes in 2016-2017. By 2018-2019, he was creating socially themed triptychs. His latest series, “cute little faces,” features vintage doll heads. Hoover’s passion for new subjects and techniques continually expands his work.

On Thursday, April 24th at 7:00 PM, the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley will present its annual Yom HaShoah program at the South Bend Civic Theatre. The program will include a short candle-lighting ceremony in memory of those who perished during the Holocaust, along with Gulfshore Playhouse Education’s touring production of Remember: The Story of Abe Price. This is a free, but ticketed event.

Who is Abe Price?

At just 16 years old, Abraham Piasecki’s life was uprooted by the Nazi invasion of Poland. From living in the ghetto of Kielce to imprisonment at Auschwitz-Birkenau, Remember brings to life the harrowing true story of a Holocaust survivor who escaped Nazi captivity five times. After the war, Price moved with his wife, Sala, to the United States. Later in life, they moved to Naples, where Price became an advocate, educator, and author. He died on February 25, 2014.

This immersive, challenging, and ultimately captivating story of resilience brings us into one man’s memories and asks us to never forget. Directed by Playhouse Director of Education Steven Calakos, Remember was designed to be performed in classrooms and cultural facilities across Southwest Florida and the country. Written to meet Florida Holocaust education standards, the play provides students with an opportunity to learn and reflect on the Holocaust and its relevance in their own lives. Now, community members are invited to witness this unique, true story during this special tour.

Private performances are scheduled for April 23, 2025, at 2 PM at Adams High School and April 24, 2025, at 2 PM at Penn High School. Remember features Vic Caroli as Abe Price, with an ensemble cast composed of Jim Corsica, Joshua Neth, Gavin Ott, and Sue Schaffel, who take on a host of other characters.

“As it grows more and more difficult to provide first-hand testimonials of Holocaust survivors for students, plays like Remember keep these stories alive. Remember tells a difficult story and contextualizes the Holocaust for students in an urgent, engaging, and memorable way. Abe Price was passionate about telling his story, and our hope is that this play honors his memory and his desire to ensure what happened to him and so many others is never forgotten,” said director Steven Calakos.

The following passage is from Sid Price, the son of Abe, sharing his thoughts:

“My brother Herb and I are very excited to be bringing the play Remember: The Story of Abe Price to South Bend.

My father survived the Holocaust and escaped from five different camps. He lived in South Bend from 1952-1983 before moving to Naples, Florida. He spoke about the Holocaust to students at high schools, middle schools, and colleges. He wrote books about the Holocaust and made a YouTube video, which led to the founding of the Naples Holocaust Museum in 1998.

Four years ago, the Naples Playhouse wanted to create a play about the Holocaust and asked the Museum for stories about survivors. They reviewed a dozen stories and chose my father’s. The play has been presented at many locations in Florida and Ohio. His story is very dramatic and impactful, serving as a great way to educate the next generation.

My father passed away at the age of 91 in 2014. My brother Harry is in California and can’t attend, but he sends his regards to all his friends here. Herb and I will answer questions after the three shows in South Bend.”

Every Monday and Wednesday afternoon, the air fills with the lively clatter of tiles and the spirited calls of “bam” and “crack” as women of all ages gather around card tables. These ladies, hailing from various corners of our community, come together to play the ancient Chinese game of Mahjong. For many, this cherished tradition has been a lifelong passion, and the Jewish Federation has become their chosen venue for these joyful gatherings.

Seeing these friends gather together inside our space has inspired our Taste of Chugim: Jewish Community Club Fair, on Sunday, February 23, from 2:00-4:00 PM at the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley. “Chugim” means clubs in Hebrew, and this event is your chance to explore various activities and interests, from art and music to sports and volunteering. Connect with community members, share your passions, and find your people in South Bend!

Starting in January, we will begin to offer a new series featuring a trio of Jewish Studies scholars from the University of Notre Dame. On Wednesday, January 8th at 7:00 PM, Dr. Tsachi (Isaac) Slater will offer an in-person presentation called “Rewriting the People of the Book: Three Modern Jewish Perspectives on Textual Authority.” Dr. Slater is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Jewish Studies at the University of Notre Dame. The lecture will take place at the Jewish Federation and will include light refreshments and a musical prelude. Register at TheJewishFed.org/Scholars.

Other lecturers include Dr. Tzvi Novick on “The Ancient Synagogue as Theater,” and a special guest in March to be announced in the coming weeks.

PJ Library returns Sunday, January 12th at 2:00 PM with a new program called Mitzvah Makers, which will task our kids with creating a vision board for the new year, full of the many mitzvahs and goals they hope to achieve in 2025. RSVP to attend at TheJewishFed.org/PJ.

Our NEXTGen Jewish Young Adults continue to plan fun social events that deepen their connection with each other and our local community. As soon as my parents, the irrepressible extroverts Harold and Doreen Zisla, moved to the South Bend area in the early 1950s, they began developing the vast and deep network of relationships that nurtured them for the remainder of their lives.

People were drawn to Harold, and he to them—people he worked with at the old Ball Band (Uniroyal) factory in Mishawaka. Staff, visitors, teachers, students, and exhibitors at the Art Center. This list also includes artists in the community, students, staff, faculty, and administrators at Indiana University South Bend, and the greens’ keeping crew and fellow golfers at Erskine, the check-out line clerks at the neighborhood grocery store, nurses, aides, and medical staff at the dialysis unit where Harold received treatment for a short period before his death. Plus, there’s a long list of others throughout the community.

It was much the same for Doreen. I could not go to a restaurant with my parents without someone—whether a customer or a server—greeting them as friends with warmth and affection.

My parents joined Temple Beth-El early on. Friendships established there provided the foundation for their vibrant social life and the social network that contributed to making South Bend a wonderful home. It was through Temple that they began gaining acceptance in South Bend, a place that at that time too often treated Jews as outsiders. These relationships established through Temple lasted, as did my parents’ sense of belonging to the Jewish community and the importance of their Jewish identity.

Harold’s place in the community, and his art, grew exponentially from those early years. The Federation exhibition honors his extraordinary and captivating work and helps place it in the context of a community that supported his unending creative production and contributed significantly to my parents having lives well-lived.

Hello! I am pleased to present you with the lineup for this year’s Michiana Jewish Film Festival, presented by Merrill Lynch Wealth Management - Kahn, Ruthrauff & Associates. We hope you will join us at DeBartolo Performing Arts Center for one or more (we hope more!) of the films. With input from our ad hoc committee, I have been working diligently over the past several months, reviewing at least 100 trailers and film descriptions and watching over 50 films to find the right mix for this year’s program. I am really excited about the lineup and hope you will be, too. The eight films will delight and provide perspective, and we hope will lead to thoughtful discussions with fellow filmgoers.

We are back to our traditional format for this year: two films/day for four days. Between the end of the 5:30 films and the 8:00 films, please take advantage of the tables set up in the lobby outside the theatre to bring your dinner and enjoy fellowship with your friends in attendance. Additionally, there will be a Catskills-inspired snack reception following the film on Monday, sponsored by the Kurt and Tessye Simon Foundation at Temple Beth-El, and a sponsor “thank you” dessert reception between films on Thursday night. This month, our community will have two important opportunities for remembrance.

On Sunday May 5th at 3:00 PM, our Federation will host the annual Yom Hashoah Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony. This year, children from South Bend’s Lasalle Academy will conduct the memorial ceremony under the leadership of their teacher, Ms. Cindi Baumgartner.

Our keynote speaker will be Judy Batalion, author of the bestselling book The Light of Days: The Untold Story of Women Resistance Fighters in Hitler’s Ghettos.

According to the author’s website, the book tells:

“One of the most important stories of World War II, already optioned by Steven Spielberg for a major motion picture: a spectacular, searing history that brings to light the extraordinary accomplishments of brave Jewish women who became resistance fighters…”

The event is co-sponsored by the Federation’s Okon Family Fund for Holocaust Education and Temple Beth El’s Kurt and Tessye Simon Fund for Holocaust Remembrance.

On Sunday, May 19th, at 11:00 AM, the Federation will host the annual Yom Haazmaut Israel Independence Day event organized by our shaliach, Omer Karavani.

As in years past, we will begin the program with a memorial ceremony for fallen soldiers and victims of terror. With the horrific attack by Hamas on October 7th and the ongoing war, this year’s program will take on special significance.

To make the memorial ceremony more personal, we will remember fallen soldiers and civilians who were friends of former shlichim and of the family of Omer Karavani.

We will also be hosting a delegation of three residents of our Partnership region in Western Galilee, who will also remember their fallen friends.

Following the ceremony, we will have a unique opportunity to hear first-hand accounts from the delegation members about the extreme difficulties they face living near the border with Lebanon.

Due to the ongoing fighting with Hezbollah that began on October 7th, two of the three delegation members and their families have been evacuated from their homes, along with 80,000 other Israelis, for over six months.

The day would not be complete without a fabulous Israeli lunch being organized by Judy Sassler.

Following lunch, we will hear a message of hope and inspiration from a special guest. Gadeer Kamal-Mreeh is a member of Israel’s Druze sect who now works as a Senior Envoy for the Jewish Agency. She is a former member of the Knesset and the first Druze woman to be a member of the Knesset. 

It’s important to note that all male members of the Druze community in Israel volunteer to serve in the Israeli army. Their service and sacrifice to the defense of Israel is invaluable, especially in Israel’s war with Hamas and Hezbollah. 

Gadeer will speak on “The Incredible Potential of Israel’s Rich Mosaic and Complex Society.” In her talk, we will hear about Israeli society from Gadeer’s authentic point of view as an Israeli Druze woman.

Painter, printmaker, survivor; featured artist Lea Goldman shares her series of large oil paintings, “Gathering Sparks,” based on the teachings of Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World) by Rabbi Isaac Luria.

A holocaust survivor, Lea spent World War II as a wandering homeless refugee, was incarcerated in British prison camps, and lived in Israel during her growing years.

This project includes a number of large oil paintings painted by Lea. They seem to grow from Lea’s Jewish and nomadic traditions. According to art historian Elyse Speaks, “Lea developed a visual language of translation, on the uses of folklore and fairy tale, to communicate a deep investment in reverie and its possibilities.”

As an artist, Lea created a large group of oil paintings called “Gathering Sparks,” based on an old Hasidic legend of Tikkun Olam and the world’s creation. In the legend, “goodness” was stored in a magical vessel that broke at the time of creation, and the sparks of good grace spread all over the universe, diluting the essential goodness in our lives. Every person has a purpose and a duty to gather those sparks of goodness and return them to their original vessel.

The exhibit is on display until Tuesday, June 4, Monday to Friday, 10 AM to 3 PM, at the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley.

Who is Lea Goldman?

Lea Goldman is a Holocaust survivor from Romania, raised in Russia, Mongolia, and Israel, and finally, a 1975 immigrant to the US. Her visual work is narrative, with close attention to abstract elements such as composition, texture, and form. Her interest in Hebrew and other cultural traditions, legends, and folklore evolved into a personal mythology, constantly developing and expressed in an array of art images, mediums, and materials.

Lea earned a BA in Art and Special Education from the University of Haifa, Israel; an MA in Art and Education from Columbia University Teachers College, New York City, NY; and an MFA in Studio Arts from California State University Los Angeles. One of her first jobs when she immigrated to the United States was teaching at the South Bend Hebrew School. She is in touch with several former students who still call her Morah Lea.

Lea’s prints and paintings have been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the country, have received many awards, and were featured in numerous solo shows. Her art is a part of The Lerner Theater Collection, curated by the Midwest Museum of Art, Elkhart, IN, as well as other private and public collections; six of her big paintings were on display in the main lobby of Century Center as a part of the South Bend Art Museum’s Sightlines Project, South Bend, IN. Her work is included in the Midwest Museum of American Art Permanent Collection, and the permanent collection of the South Bend Museum of Art.

Who is Douglas Simmons?

Assisting Lea in her gallery talk is Douglas Simmons. Douglas is a professional musician, author of six novels, two philosophy books, a book of poetry, multiple articles such as one in the local South Bend arts magazine PAN-O-PLY, and a collection of more poems in the South Bend Museum of Art’s, “An Ekphrastic—Sharing of the Muse.”

Douglas is also an American veteran who, in order to provide arms and assistance to the Israeli forces, parachuted with the US military troops into the Sinai Desert in 1973 during the Yom Kippur War.
